It is said that elephants never forget, and I believe wholeheartedly that this is true. Elephants have an enlarged hippocampus (much much much bigger than a humans) which is located in the brains medial temporal lobe and is responsible for the long-term or “declarative” memory. As a female elephant gets older, her memory improves. A female adult elephant can recognize more than a hundred individual elephant calls, including ones of elephants that are deceased. Elephants are said to perform a burial ritual and create a burial site for those who have died in their herd, and have been known to return to these “sites” on many occasions throughout their life. Animals are incredible and they are capable of feeling all that we do, if this snippet of information doesn’t make you question why we, as a society, place ourselves above every other earthling on this planet, I don’t know what will.
